Collegiate Lifting Update
by Jon Magendie
On the motions passed through the Collegiate Committee, up for vote at this year's NGB meeting:
Standardized medals--we have the OK to do this, and the Chairman is in the process of finding the company to be named the supplier. Please continue sending in ideas and designs for the medals and plaques.
Waiving USAPL Club Registration proceedures: this was voted down, as there was concern about the Team Fees that go to the meet director, who has to buy the trophies...we will discuss this issue more at next year's Collegiate Business Meeting.
Using IPF team scoring proceedures. This motion was approved. At the 2002 National Collegiates, we will use this proceedure. To explain: each team (registered as a Club with USAPL) is allowed the full 10 women and 11 men spread throughout the weight classes, with no more than two in any class.
First place will earn 12, second place 9, then 8,7,6,5,4,3,2, and those placing 10th and below will all earn one point each. At the end of the day, however, only each team's TOP SIX PLACES will be counted for the team score. If some team has six lifters place first, five below, that team scores a perfect 72 for the win. Now is the time to go after the TEAM title.
Register your teams, and get ready to rumble!!!
The next National Collegiates is being held in Killeen, Texas by Mr. Johnny Graham, meet dirctor extraordinaire...However, the date has been moved to APRIL 12-14, 2002. Apparently Mr. Bush needs the meet hotel, and could not be persuaded otherwise.
Several lifters from the Collegiate ranks lifted at this year's Men's Open in Omaha, and fared well. "Doc" Holloway (La Tech) got 1st in the 123's. Trey Cunningham (recent La Tech grad.) got 2nd in the 132's having a terrific day. P.J. Chovanec (another Techster) got fourth in the 220's, proving to all collegians that he is in fact human. He will do much better in the following years, and I predict he will make a run for title next year.
Several former Collegiate lifters lifted, too. Charr Gahagan (La Tech) finished 2nd behind Benemerito, having lost his grip about a half hair from locking out a huge 804 DL. 148 Jeremy Arias (2000 Collegiate Champ. from U. No. Colorado) put up a good show, winning the class. Wade Hooper (formerly of La. Tech) won the 165's, barely missing depth on two monstrous attempts at a WR 733 squat. The 242's had Ryan Goldin, who lifted at the '97 Collegiates in Chicago. Yes, he still has a great bench. The 275's was won by Tony Cardella, formerly of Texas A&M. Tony had a fantastic day!
Congratulations to the collegians, past and present, and to all the lifters at this year's Men's Open. Thanks to Mr. Jim Hart for doing such a fine job putting on this meet--three days and no misloads!
For those of you who host high school meets, be sure to see the changes concerning high school membership cards; more info at the Collegiate Lifter's page.
